An infant or baby is an extremely young person. The term “infant” derives from the Latin word in-fans, meaning “unable to speak.” There is no exact definition for infancy. Quite often babies are called infants until they reach the age of one. However, babies are traditionally called “toddlers” when they start to walk whether or not they have reached their first birthday. Daycares with an “infant room” providing care will call all their children in the infant room “infants” even if they are older than a year and/or walking; they will sometimes use the term “walking infant”. Babies at this stage are referred to as “wobblers”.

Child development is the study or examination of processes and mechanisms that operate during the physical and mental development of an infant into an adult. Pediatrics is the branch of medicine relating to the care of children. It encompasses ages from prenatal to teenagers and even young adults (ages 0-21 years). The most basic learning process is imitation, one’s personal repetition of an observed process, such as a smile. Thus an imitation will take one’s time (attention to the details), space (a location for learning), skills (or practice), and other resources (for example, a protected area). Through copying, most infants learn how to hunt (i.e., direct one’s attention), feed and perform most basic tasks necessary for survival.

Parenting typically utilizes rewards, praise, and discipline or punishment as tools of behavioral control or teaching. Most child development experts now agree that corporal punishment is not an effective behavior modification tool, especially in excess, and many parents have adopted non-physical approaches to child discipline. In some jurisdictions, corporal punishment (e.g., spanking or whipping) has been prohibited by law.

“Parenting” seeks to create strong emotional bonds and avoids physical punishment, with discipline being accomplished through interactions recognizing a child’s emotional needs. The term “child training” implies a specific type of parenting that focuses on holistic understanding of the child. The “Taking Children Seriously” philosophy sees both praise and punishment as manipulative and harmful to children and advocates other methods to reach agreement with them.

Educational psychology can in part be understood through its relationship with other disciplines.
